From Khloe Kardashian to Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Aniston, celebrities all over are obsessed with Brazilian blow dries.

Once a sleekening secret of the showbiz industry, the blowouts — or keratin treatments — are now much more commonplace, with most hairdresser chains in the UK offering some kind of smoothing treatment.

What’s more, nowadays they need not break the bank and are actually a super speedy (and not too spendy) way to make your hair that bit more manageable.

Yet, so many of us everyday folk (note: not Hollywood actors, glamorous reality stars or Instagram-famous influencers) are still confused about the procedure, choosing just to scan over keratin treatments in the hairdresser menu.

Speaking exclusively to OK! Online, Hari’s Creative Director Craig Taylor answered the questions everyone has about the treatment…

Are Brazilian blow dries safe?

Craig explained: “Yes, in recent years the treatment was reformulated due to strict UK regulations meaning that the Formaldehyde levels and treatment is 10 per cent safe.

“The treatment involves saturating your hair for 20 minutes in a Formaldehyde-releasing solution that coats each strand before it is blowdried straight. The process straightens hair textures and completely eliminates frizz.”

Do they make your hair greasy?

Many people — especially those with fine hair — worry the procedure will weigh their locks down, or even leave your tresses looking or feeling greasy. Craig dispells that myth, explaining it’s just the first few days after having it done you might be feeling the need for a shampoo.

He said: “After treatment you can’t wash your hair for up to three days so you may be tempted to wash it but don’t!

“Freshly applied keratin is malleable and so the treatment needs this time to set into the hair properly for best, long-lasting results. Avoid touching, brushing or playing with your hair too frequently, as this will make your hair feel greasy!”

But once that period is over, your hair will be smoother and tangle free — not greasy.

The confusion may arise from the change in hair texture, however. Craig notes: “If you have curly hair, the treatment will reduce the natural volume of your hair, and may, therefore, make hair seem or feel greasier more quickly.”

Do keratin treatments make your hair straight?

That depends on your natural hair texture. Craig stated: “If you have naturally straight or slightly wavy hair and suffer from frizz it will straighten, smoothen and boost hair health.”

“The treatment is designed to make the hair feel healthier, whilst straightening the hair texture.

“This is done by creating a barrier around the hair shaft, making it smooth and frizz free. If you usually style your hair straight, the keratin treatment can shorten your blow-dry and styling time by 40 per cent.”

But will it completely straighten curly hair?

There is the misconception that the keratin treatment is a straightening procedure. It is actually a hair relaxing treatment, smoothing out the frizz and making your hair easier to straighten.

“So, if you have curly hair, after your first wash it will dry curly as normal but will be noticeably smoother and sleeker, making it a lot more manageable, without frizz.

“It will also be more resilient and stay straight (once you have styled and straightened it) until your next wash.

“If you get caught in the rain or the humidity, your hair won’t curl or kink as it usually would have before – it was a lot more resilient and would stay straight until my next hair wash.”

How long will a Brazilian blow dry last?

Craig details: “Done correctly, results can last for up to three months.

“But do make sure you use the right aftercare treatments, products, and tools as this will enhance results.

“I recommend using sulphate-free, gentle shampoos such as the Rahua Hydration Range, these allow the treatment to progressively enhance, making hair look fresh, hydrated and keep that frizz free hold for longer.

“For intense at home treatments, Olaplex is highly recommended as it will rebuild broken bonds. For drying, use a diffuser – they don’t apply excessive heat, which will further dehydrate hair.”
