Seconds before the gun went off, Ricky Champ’s character had been seen placing a loaded weapon on the bar of the Queen Vic as his feud with the Carter family came to a head.
But although Stuart has been revealed as the victim of the shooting, viewers are still being kept in the dark as to who pulled the trigger.
Fans have come up with several theories and suspects, with character like Linda Carter and even Dennis Rickman all having the finger pointed at them.
So who shot Stuart Highway? Here’s everything we know so far…
What happened when Stuart got shot on EastEnders?
On Monday 3 September’s EastEnders Stuart Highway, played by Ricky Champ, had a tense confrontation with Mick, played by Danny Dyer, as he tried to convince Mick to take his revenge and kill him, but Mick managed to stop himself.
At the same time, Mick’s sister Tina learned that Dylan had retracted his police statement about Stuart intimidating him, meaning all the Carters were left on edge before they went to bed.
Unbeknownst to the family, Stuart was hiding out in the Queen Vic with a loaded gun and as he rang the bell above the bar in the middle of the night, a member of the family headed down the stairs to see what was going on.
Stuart then turned to the mystery figure and said: “Must be my lucky day,” before the camera panned to the front of the Queen Vic and a gun shot was heard.
Who shot Stuart on EastEnders? Who are the suspects?
Mick was missing during the time of Stuart’s shooting and even contemplated finishing him off for good by trying to suffocate him when nobody was looking.
Fans questioned if he finally snapped and killed his troubled childhood friend, however he later denied he was the culprit to wife Linda.
Despite protesting his innocence, Mick was arrested on suspicion of carrying out the attempted murder of Stuart on 13 September – but is he really guilty?
Despite Mick initially sparking suspicion, his wife Linda was later seen cleaning the gun and throwing it into the canal in a panic – unaware the Keanu Taylor was watching her the entire time.
Was this proof Linda shot Stuart? Or could she have been covering for someone else?
The character later confessed to husband Mick that she only did this believing he was the shooter but he dropped the confession that Linda had got it wrong and he was not behind the crime.
Tina has a history with Stuart and has no made no secret of her hatred for him.
She was seen delaying calling the ambulance after Stuart was shot and has since expressed her guilt to the police, but denies being the one to pull the trigger
Halfway was seen sobbing over his brother’s body after the shooting, but could it all be an act? He character has been getting increasingly frustrated with his sibling’s erratic behaviour – could he finally have snapped?
Another theory suggests that Stuart turned the gun on himself as a way of exacting revenge on the Carter family.
Several fans have suggested that he’s set up the shooting as a way to frame Mick, Linda or another Carter family member.
Dylan was arrested on suspicion of shooting Stuart after Tina led the police to him while meeting up with him in a park.
Tina became convinced of his guilt due to his erratic behaviour but he has denied being the culprit, even after his arrest.
Speaking to the police during his interview, he told officers: “I shouldn’t be here. You’ve got the wrong man and I can prove it.”
Fans have questioned if Sharon Mitchell’s son Dennis Rickman is involved in the shooting, after the youngster was seen acting very suspiciously on the latest episode.
Dennis was convinced the police were after him and told his mum it was because he’d heard the gunshot on the night of the crime – but he could be hiding his real involvement?
Dennis has previously done Stuart’s dirty work, having been paid by the thug to steal the keys from the Queen Vic, and Stuart was recently seen asking the youngster to do him another favour.
Following this, EastEnders fans think Stuart may have paid Dennis to shoot him in a bid to frame Mick or another member of the Carter family.
