Upcoming drama The Cry is set to star former Doctor Who actress Jenna Coleman and Top Of The Lake’s Ewen Leslie in the lead roles.

Filming for the series took place earlier this year in Glasgow, Scotland, and Australia, and now it’s air date is finally approaching.

The Cry is a four-part drama which tells the story of a young mother called Joanna, who life is turned upside down when she travels from Scotland to Australia with her husband Alistair.

Travelling with their young baby, the couple travel across the world to help Alistair gain custody of his daughter he had with his ex wife.

While staying in a small coastal town in Australia, an unthinkable tragedy breaks the family apart when their newborn baby is abducted.

According to the BBC, The Cry “is the catalyst for a journey into the disintegrating psychology of a young woman, exposing the myths and truths of motherhood.”

Victoria actress Jenna has described reading the script as “like walking a tightrope, racing page to page, unsettling, unknowable, uncomfortable, and thrilling.”

The Cry has been adapted from Helen FitzGerald’s 2013 novel of the same name.

Jenna Coleman and Ewen Leslie star as Joanna and Alistair, while Asher Keddie plays his Australian ex wife.

Stella Gonet, Sophie Kennedy Clark, Alex Dimitriades, Markella Kavenagh and Shareena Clanton have all also been confirmed for the cast.

Praising the show earlier this year, BBC Drama Senior Commissioning Editor Elizabeth Kilgarriff and BBC Drama Commissioning Executive Gaynor Holmes said: “We’re very excited to have started filming in Australia and to have such an incredible array of Australian talent joining Jenna and Ewen, topped off with some of Scotland’s most accomplished actors.

“Watching them bring Helen FitzGerald’s gripping, page-turner novel and Jacquelin Perske’s wonderful scripts to life is a joy and we can’t wait for BBC One audiences to see The Cry.”

When does The Cry start?

BBC One have yet to reveal an official start date for The Cry, but it’s thought it will air later in 2018.
